GARMIN EDGE 1050 OR WAHOO ELEMNT ACE

Reviews of the Garmin 1050 and Wahoo Ace bike computers at their initial release were quite critical. However, after using these computers for months with the latest firmware updates and apps, I’ve answered two questions to help you decide whether one is right for you:

  1. What type of rider should consider a 1050 or Ace?
  2. If you are that kind of rider, which computer is better for you?

  • Just curious your thoughts on the Wahoo Roam 3 now that has been released as well? I know you recommended the Wahoo Roam 2 in your last comparision video. But now that there have been a bunch of new models released, I am curious which you l like best for an all-rounder bike computer now? Thanks!

    • Andrew, Haven’t tested the Roam 3 yet but based on the Ace vs. Edge 1050 and the operating systems that carry forward to the Roam and Bolt 3 and what I expect will be the 850 and 550, I’ll likely favor the Roam and 850 for the same situations where I favor the Ace and 1050. The Karoo 3 is a nice alternative to the two of them, especially if you favor bright screens and a simpler GUI than the Edge units. Steve

  • Do you plan to do an updated review with the Karoo 3, Roam 3, vs Garmin or would this be the main point with the current offerings in the Ace vs 1050? It seems we are spoiled with choices now between the three companies. Also just curious if you still use a Roam for your own biking? Thanks as always for the great content.

    • Good timing. My Roam 3 (and Trackr) arrive tomorrow. I’ll begin testing it against the Karoo 3 and Garmin 840. Look for the review in September. I do still use my Roam V2 but also use my Karoo and Ace as well depending what I’m riding and testing. Look for the review in September.

      • Thank you as always for the informative and helpful content, will be curious how you like them. From my experiences so far this summer it seems the trackr is a “me too” product but not necessarily revolutionary in any way. Right now it is $50 more than the Garmin as well so not cost effective either. I’m not sure if it can trump Garmin whom has owned that space for a decade now. With the Roam 3 , I do think it will be easier to read the numbers size-wise than the other units, but is hindered by the new screen which makes everything duller. Its nice to see they added street names and a bike bell. But my regular bike bell still functions better and with the speaker pointed towards the rider it actually doesn’t project out far enough for runners ahead to actually hear it. I tried both side by side and it pretty much was useless unless you were right behind someone on a public trail. To add further confusion to the mix, The new Garmin MTB seems to be an Edge 840 minus the training metrics but with a slightly newer interface like the edge 1050. It seems the Roam V2 is still the best in terms of screen visibility and the best price now. The only downside to the older units of course is they still have not integrated them into the new wahoo app.
